Its hard to say, I am not questioning your intelligence but is there oil in the motor since you changed the pan, maybe it all leaked out after you changed it and now the motor locked because of no oil.???

Leaking oil ..... gasket seal? Help please.?

ok so I went to the lube place to get my oil changed and the guy told me something along the lines of I have oil leaking... something about a gasket seal on my oil pan?? Does anyone know what he may be talking about and any idea how many of my limbs im going to have to give up to get this fixed. yes there is a gasket underneath the oil pan, just have the bolts tightened some around the pan first to see if it stops the leak, there are probably about 15 to 20 bolts that hold the oil pan on, if you don't see oil on the ground under your car where you park it all the time it's not leaking bad enough to worry about it right now.

How to remove Kia Spectra oil drain plug?

I'm trying to change the oil on my '08 Kia Spectra, got it up on Rhino ramps, but cannot get the drain plug off of the oil pan.



I'm using a 17mm attachment on my socket wrench, as it fits perfectly, but after trying many, many times, the plug will not budge. I don't know if it's just cause I'm not able to get much leverage since the plug is only about a foot off of the ground, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or has any suggestions.

Is your oil pan aluminum with a steel drain plug? If so a corrosion builds between these two metals freezing them together. After you remove it make sure you use a proper size copper washer at installation. Try using a shallow socket with a breaker bar, then place your foot against the bar and push with a steady pressure being careful that the socket stays straight on the plug. If it still does not break free make sure all fluid leak traces are cleaned away then using a propane torch carefully heat the plug and then cool quickly with water, this sudden temperature change breaks the corrosion seal.

It depends on where your oil pan is located. If it is easily accessible then it shouldn't take too long. If it is in a place that is hard to reach, then your looking at the job taking a long time. A shop is going to charge you anywhere between $50-165 an hour. So shop arround!



Some vehicles have the oilpan in an area that the entire motor needs pulled to get to. Other vehicles might have it where you can even see it.



The gasket itself is arround $20 (at least for my car).

Installation will cost you more than the gasket itself. Just buy the gasket and shop around for labor. Tell the mechanic exactly what you want them to do. Don't buy the gasket in the dealer, please. Dont waste your money for that.

Oil drain plug wont go back in?

I have an 1989 Crown Victoria.I was attempting to change my oil myself and when i was trying to put the rear drain plug back in but it kept slipping in and out of the hole. so i bought a bigger nut to widen the hole to hold the big nut, but it wouldnt screw in all the way. Idk if the threads on the pan are stripped or what. i put the bolt in as far as i could and wrapped it up in teflon tape.it's been holding all day with no leaks and being driven a bit.How long do you think it'l last before i have to get a new oil pan or just a bigger bolt?Oil drain plug wont go back in?
A self tapping screw requires a little patience to get in.

Try this, it'll properly cut the threads you need:

1) tighten the bolt until it won't turn.

2) unscrew 1 turn

3) continue 1 %26amp; 2 until the plug seats. Remove every 5 times or so to clean the threads on the bolt.

you need to retap it and get a good fitting plug in there. don't mickey mouse it together, and if you're not comfortable doing it yourself find someone to do it.

Why not get the self-tapping oil plug bolt for stripped threads. The auto parts houses carry them. They make new threads in the hole that are slightly larger than the original ones.Oil drain plug wont go back in?
find a better auto parts store than the one you went to. there is a rubber plug that is installed with a green screwdriver like probe, made just for stripped out drain plugs. i'm sure there are other types, too. re threading the stripped hole needs to be done carefully when you go with the oversized plug. you are trying to re cut the bad threads to get that tighter fit, not cross thread them to make new ones. the rubber plug is fool proof, anybody can do it. just make sure you save the green tool in the glove box for when you go to change the oil next.

Step1Open the hood and look for obvious signs of wetness. Oil leaks usually come from a gasket: a piece of material, usually rubber, cork or silicone, that creates a seal between two metal parts. Look for places where different parts of the engine are bolted together.

Step2Inspect underneath the car with a flashlight for signs of wetness. Oil here could be from a leak under the engine, or it could be collecting from a leak higher up. Wipe the suspect areas clean with a rag so you can inspect them closely and pinpoint the leak's source.

Step3Consider getting the engine professionally steam-cleaned at an auto-repair shop if oil has leaked everywhere. This will make it easier for you or your mechanic to locate the leak.

Step4Place a large piece of cardboard on the ground under the engine. Make marks on the cardboard to indicate its location in relation to the tires and the car's front and rear. Leave it in place overnight. Use rocks to hold it down if you park outside. (Some oil leaks occur only when the engine is running, but the cardboard method described here will still help locate these kind of leaks, because the oil will drip down.)

Step5Check the cardboard in the morning to determine the amount of leakage and where it's dripping from.

Step6You may find other types of leaks. Motor oil out of the bottle is the color of honey. Oil that has been in the engine for a little while is dark brown or even black. Coolant is green and smells sweet. Brake fluid is very light brown (almost clear) and very slippery.
