Oil change on 1996 lincoln towncar?

how difficult is it to change the oil on a 96 lincoln towncar? Is there any special tool to take out the bolt in the oil pan? Where is the oil filter?Oil change on 1996 lincoln towncar?
Jack the front of the car up high enough that the front wheels are not touching the ground. With a suitable drain bucket placed under the oil pan, remove the drain plug with a 5/8%26quot; or 16mm wrench, and drain the engine oil. Turn front wheels ALL THE WAY to the right. With an oil filter wrench, remove the oil filter from the lower left/front corner of the engine. Replace with a new filter (Ford part number FL-820S). Set vehicle back to the ground. Fill up engine with 5 liters of the proper grade 5W30 engine oil of your choice. Hope this helps.Oil change on 1996 lincoln towncar?

How much oil do I put in my 2000 Lincoln LS?

I have not seen anything on the internet on exactly how much oil I should put in my engine at my next oil change. I have only seen that the oil pan holds 6.7 Quarts but I want to make sure that that is how much I should put in the engine, I have also seen somewhere where it said 6.9 quarts and I just want to make sure I am putting in enough and not really overfilling it.How much oil do I put in my 2000 Lincoln LS?

  • Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?

When i got my oil change done..the guy said my oil pan has a hole in it the size of a pin hole. i have an 07 Pontiac G6. Im not even going to bother to bring it all the way to my dealer bc I know theyll try to blame me on doing it although I have hit NOTHING, i think it was done when my car had to get towed, the first week i bought it.

How much is it going to cost to replace the oil pan?? for i am a grad student and hoping it is not expensive.

thanks in advance :o)Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?
I would say about $500. And also, don't be a line jumper. Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?
Well that's not a cheap job at all it be about I bet 250 to 350 bucks at least.I'd be getting a dealership to look at it when possible bec it could be a factory mistake or faulty oil pan etc.

Was there any marks or dents or scrapes by the pin hole at all? If not it's likely its a factory fault and it's always had the pin hole but no one has noticed it.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if one dealership doesn't want to warranty repair and there is no obvious scrapes or dents etc call the head office up and complain or try different dealerships etc.Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?
its going to cost you around 4-500 bucks to get that one replaced, and that's having it done through a local shop,id see about getting one through a dealer and then price out the labor through a local repair shop, good luck.Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?
You might want to have a seat before you get the answer to your question. It will be in the 3 to 4 hundred range. This is a low guess, due to it being a newer G6.

You may find some one like me,That can repair it on the car. Need to know how to clean the boo boo very good.

I have done this many times, the pan is low.Made of soft aluminum. The up front position is going to be damaged.

Drain the oil and wait a day, then clean Patch with J-B WELD KWIK. Wait another day an your ready to replace the oil. If it leaks , You repeat until you cleaned it well enough for the weld to bond, which is the tricky part.

Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?
how do you know its not a factory defect? most cars have metal or plastic oil pans and both could be repaired fairly easy if the hole is a pin hole size as you say. the metal pan could have a braze weld done and the plastic type could be treated with plastic weld both under 100 bucks the pan doesnt need replaced just repaired.Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?
    bbmak024,

You can buy an OEM oil pan from rockauto ranging $16.50 - $53 for an acdelco brand. Labor on the book is only 1.1 hours times the prevailing labor rate in your market so you should end up spending from $80 to $150 total + oil change. Or you can find a local home mechanic on craigslist, ask and call 2-3 of his references and pay him/her $25-40 for labor. It's a very easy job.

If you've changed the oil youself before, then you have enough skill to tackle this job on your own. There are 14 bolts to remove after you've drain the oil. Pry gently with a butter knife or wide flathead screwdriver to remove the old pan. Apply a light bead of gasket sealer to new pan and tighten the bolts by hand the first 2 complete turns before using a wrench. Just tighten evenly in opposing order then clockwise. Don't over tighten(25 ft lbs) , you don't want to strip the block. Complete the oil change.

Mazda 6 Oil Pan Stripped. What Do I do?

Jiffylube stripped my oil pan when the changed my oil. I have a Mazda 6. I took it to a place to have it looked at cause theres oil leak and said that the drain can be re-tapped or I have to get the oil pan replaced.

How much is retapping the oil pan going to cost? Is that something thats going to be cheap? I went to shucks to see if they have the rubber plug there but they said that it was only a temporary fix and they dont have anything I can fix it with.Mazda 6 Oil Pan Stripped. What Do I do?
hey buddy , you can get i re tapped with whats called a helicoil but then you will have to take the pan off anyway to get rid of the metal shavings left in there due to the tapping in , the other way is with a screw in thread insted of a helicoil the screw in thread with sump bolt to match should cost about 9 dollars au . and takes about 5 min and comes with all the instructions you need to do it yourself put some thread lock on it like locktight befor you scerw it in and wait for it to dry befor you put the sump plug back in . . . hope i helped cheersMazda 6 Oil Pan Stripped. What Do I do?
A retapp consists of taking the pan off and retapping it its not a big deal and im sure it will not cost you much just go to a good mechanic its all labor and then the parts Drain plug and gasket.Mazda 6 Oil Pan Stripped. What Do I do?
Since Jiffy Lube does not remove the oil pan, that sounds a little odd. Unless you are saying they stripped the drain hole. That is a $2.00 fix. All that is needed is a self-tapping drain plug with gasket in the next size. It takes 2 minutes to do.

They do get a lot of wear and tear. Last oil change they changed the drain plug on my car (first time since car was new, 1995), and it was something like $1.75.Mazda 6 Oil Pan Stripped. What Do I do?
Talk to Jiffy Lube. I'll bet this happens all the time with them..Mazda 6 Oil Pan Stripped. What Do I do?
Back to Jiffy lube and talk to the management. Talk to the owner, not the dude in charge, unless he wants to make things right. They can retap the drain plug but I'm not too sure if that will stop the leak completely unless you go oversize. good luck.Mazda 6 Oil Pan Stripped. What Do I do?
Well they were righthen it檚 stripped there is not much u can do. Take it back to JL and tell them that the oil is leaking and that they need to fix the problem. Don't tell them that u took the car anyplace else. Just tell them that you noticed the oil leaking and they were the last ones to mess with it. Do it ASAPope you kept the receipt!

If I want to change from conventional oil to High Mileage Synthetic, how do I clear my engine?

How do I get all of the regular oil out?

I really would rather not have them mixed, at all, if possible.

Should I just undo the oil pan and let it drain for 24 hours, or something? If I want to change from conventional oil to High Mileage Synthetic, how do I clear my engine?
if it was me doing it i would add a quart of B-12 chemical to it and idle it for 5 minutes that would thin out your oil and would not hurt your bearing in the motor.then drain the old oil out. i would also use the%26lt; wix%26gt; brand of oil filter you can get the at any part place. If I want to change from conventional oil to High Mileage Synthetic, how do I clear my engine?
    oil pan ?

no dont touch the oil pan

y do u want to go to senthetic oil ?

is there another problem ?If I want to change from conventional oil to High Mileage Synthetic, how do I clear my engine?
No you don't you'll be fine. Just make sure that when you change the oil that the engine was up to operating temperature. Don't believe what anybody else tells you. This is the year 2009 Motor oils don't have near the sludging problem that they used to. If you want to change it just change it but I don't think you'll really get a benefit to high mileage oil.If I want to change from conventional oil to High Mileage Synthetic, how do I clear my engine?
If you want to go synthetic, just look for the drain nut on your oil pan. Just take that off and let it drain out. Also replace your oil filter. Let it drain until its all out. Put the nut back on and new oil filter on and refill with synthetic. Takes all of 30 mins to do. :) Good LuckIf I want to change from conventional oil to High Mileage Synthetic, how do I clear my engine?
You don't. Or you take the engine completely apart and clean it with a toothbrush. It's not a big deal, it will be completely gone in a couple oil changes anyway if you stick to synthetic.

Just take it out, get it good and hot and then park it and let it sit overnight so as much oil as possible is drained into the oil pan. Then pull the plug and go watch a couple movies. Till no oil drips out of the drain hole.

You may be able to tilt the pan by jacking the vehicle one way or the other to get a little more oil out, but again, the small amourt of conventional oil left inside really doesn't matter. If I want to change from conventional oil to High Mileage Synthetic, how do I clear my engine?
Easiest way to get the most old oil out of the engine is to do the oil change after the car has sat for at least 24 hours. That gives the oil time to drain down out of the top end of the engine and back into the oil pan to be drained.

Of course to do that you either need to drive your car up on ramps 24 hours before you plan to change the oil or you have to have some sort of hydraulic lift (or a pit...) to get under the car without starting the motor to get under it (unless you have a truck where you can get under the vehicle without lifting it anyway.) Otherwise the 24 hour wait will be for nothing if you start the engine to move the car into position to do the change.

The good news for you is that most of the old oil will drain out of the engine even if you don't let it sit for long. There is always going to be a small amount of residual oil left in the motor between changes - it's a small amount and shouldn't hurt anything. You can safely mix synthetic and regular oil anyway - they're fully compatible with each other so you won't be doing any damage changing from conventional to synthetic oil, even if you make little effort to drain every last drop of conventional oil out before you change to synthetic. If I want to change from conventional oil to High Mileage Synthetic, how do I clear my engine?
i used to work at a oil change place and one thing we did is drain all the oil and replace filter with a new one ...let the oil from the pan drain as much as you can then pour the new oil in (keeping the drain plug off) until you see the new oil coming out ..allow that to drain as well ..replace the drain plug and add oil as normal to proper level and your done.

keeping the drain plug off wile pouring in the new oil will allow the new oil to kind of flush out the old oil (not 100% in first change) but enough to get about 90-95% of it out and only use 1 maybe 2 quarts to do the %26quot;flush%26quot;.hope it helps you good luck. =)If I want to change from conventional oil to High Mileage Synthetic, how do I clear my engine?
Generally you can just change the oil/filter and you will be fine.

But if you want flush the old engine oil, you can get a cleanser from a local auto store like %26quot;Sea Foam%26quot;.

You add it to the old oil, run it for a short time, and then change the oil AND filter. Make sure to carefully read the label. DO NOT drive the car while %26quot;Sea Foam%26quot; is still in the motor! This can potentially ruin your motor.

    That should clean it out.

I have an oil change question * details in details box*?

the oil pan bolt is on really tight, damn gm dealership, and i cant get it off, im 15 and it wont budge. anyone no how to losen it and im using the right tool but it still wont budgeI have an oil change question * details in details box*?
Hate to say it but there are two ways that you can take this off. If it is that tight, it sounds like it might be cross threaded. The first way would be to getting a impact driver and use that to get it off. Another way is to use a longer handled socket or put a cheater pipe on the wrench. When you do get it off, take a look at the threads and see if there is any damage that would indicate that it was cross threaded. If it was, the pan will have to be re-threaded and will need a new drain bolt. If you find damage to the plug, take the plug to the dealership and ask to speak to a service manager and explain what happened and they should repair it for you. If you are having this much of a problem removing it now, might be a good idea to take it back now and ask them to loosen it for you. That way if it was put in wrong and the threads are messed up, it is already there and they can fix it.I have an oil change question * details in details box*?
You need what my old daddy called a cheater bar. You need to get a pipe or something similar to put over the wrench that makes it longer and gives you more leverage. MAKE SURE you are turning the bolt counter clockwise or you can twist the bolt right off.I have an oil change question * details in details box*?
Take a small hammer and tap it lightly counterclockwise until you see it move enough to loosen it by hand.I have an oil change question * details in details box*?
Put down your purse and just loose the oil plug. Double wrench it if you have to or use a socket and a breaker bar. Also make sure you are turning it in the right direction, and your not tightening the oil plug more.I have an oil change question * details in details box*?
If you can't get it with a metric box-end wrench, go with something safer, bigger and better. A shallow well 1/2 metric socket with a 12%26quot; ratchet or a 16%26quot; breaker bar. It will pop right loose. You are turning the pan bolt counter clockwise as you face the head of the bolt?

Never use an open end wrench on %26quot;tuff%26quot; stuff.

How to change a 1984 fords oil pan?

Ford publishes shop manuals for all of their cars that you can buy.

There is usually a form in the owner's manual that you can fill out and send your payment to Ford.

But if you struck the oil pan with oil strain then my suggestion is keep playing with this it will come off.How to change a 1984 fords oil pan?
I'm not sure why you want to change it. Is it because it is leaking through rust holes (I had that problem with my 1991 Ford)?

I fiber glassed it. First I used a wire brush in a drill and scrapped all the paint off where the rust holes were. Then I used a junk paint brush to put the resin on the pan, then I put the cloth over the resin and slopped more resin on the cloth.

It worked fine for a year but then the fiberglass came loose. I determined that the hot oil was too much for the resin so I got some body filler that said it resisted oil. I put little dabs over each rust hole. Then I repeated the fiberglass process. It lasted until I sold it 4 years later.

Of course if that isn't your problem, sorry for wasting your time.

  • Leaking Oil pan gasket?

Went for an oil change and they told me my oil pan gasket is leaking. How much would this type of repair generally cost?

What is the cheapest method of getting it fxed.

I'm sure I've seen stuff that you can just add to your oil to stop leaks, or am I wrong??Leaking Oil pan gasket?
try tightening the pan bolts first and see if that stops the leak and if it doesn't you will have to replace the gasket and usually it can be replaced by raising the engine a little so you can get at the bolts and get the pan down and put a new gasket on it, the stuff you add to the oil to stop a leak won't work, save your money.Leaking Oil pan gasket?
change the gasket... it souldn't be too much.... If a Mechanic was to do it It'd prolly cost 100.00 (depending on Labor rates)Leaking Oil pan gasket?
Hi, Usually just loose bolts around the pan. Sometimes you can just snug up the bolts around the pan to stop a leak. You'll feel, when tightening them. How loose they are. They do not need to be cranked down so hard as to snap them off. More problems then. Around 10-15 lbs of tork. I use a socket wrench, held close to the head. Not the end of the wrench. To tighten. Can't put too much tork to it that way. Stop leak in a bottle isn't the way to go. You don't list the car %26amp; engine you have. Otherwise I could of got more specific. Go to www.autozone.com, put in your cars info %26amp; chose repair info, specs. DaveLeaking Oil pan gasket?
The surest fix for your problem is a new oil pan drain bolt form the dealer of your auto. It'll have a new gasket already installed. Too many times aftermarket oil pan drain bolts have inadequate sealing washers and will not mate to the oil pan's opening taper. The flange bolts have seal gaskets that are made of copper or a very hard grade of nylon.

Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?

My oil pan thread is stripped. I'm wondering if buying a new pan is my only option. Can I just get a oversized self tapping drain plug? If so...how well does that work? Is it something that is going to need to be changed everyone oil change?

Or can I just bring it to a shop to get the thread repaired (Going one size up?) ? How much would that cost?

What would be the best thing to do?Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?
There are thread repair kits on the market that are quite good. Most auto parts stores sell them. It would be best to have a shop do it as without a lift it's hard to do. Basically you tap the hole oversize and then thread the insert in with the new threads of the correct size for your drain plug.Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?
Retap and get a bigger plug.Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?
Oversized drain plugs and rubber butterfly type plugs are temporary fixes only.

    They all leak eventually.

There normally isn't enough material in an oil pan to tap new threads. You can try, but

The pan will most likely have to be replaced.Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?
If it's just the plug that's stripped then yes...don't replace the pan. Just rethread the plug hole and add a strong gasket to the plug AND add high temp gasket sealer to the plug[recommended] (don't get it in the crank case but don't worry it comes off easily with a socket wrench). Temporary fix but it should hold.Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?
You can re tap it and put in a larger plug. Or you can install a hela coil which is a sleeve that has threads already in it. Re tapping it may be easier. Make sure the oil pan is completely drained.

When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?

When I have too many items to pan-fry in the pan at once, I fry in batches. However, the oil and pan get too dirty and the latter batches come out blackened. Is there a way to avoid this without having to change out the oil completely and clean the pan between batches? When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?
Just don't let the little crumbly bits that stick to the pan burn. If you have the time, let the pan cool a little and get them out with a paper towel. As long as you don't have any burnt food in the pan, the rest of the food shouldn't burn.

Also, it depends on what type of oil you are using. Olive oil has a very low smoking point and must be changed each time (that's why you should never season cast iron with olive oil). Vegetable oil and Canola oil have higher smoking points so you can reuse them more often, but they aren't as aromatic or flavorful as olive oil. I think that peanut oil has one of the highest smoking points. So if you really have to fry a lot, choose peanut oil. Otherwise, stick to veg or canola oil and you should be able to fry repeatedly. When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?
no. you need to change the oil in between. When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?

you can strain it through cheesecloth but it shouldn't be used after a second frying....also heating the oil above 400 degrees should be avoidedWhen I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?
Line a strainer with a coffee filter and strain the grease. When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?
Look, the easiest to do is just between batches....turn on the hot water...get it really hot....rinse the pan...do not scrub or wipe...and start new. It is as simple as that. I do that to keep my stuff from looking black too. Especially pancakes, pork chops...etc... It doesn't matter what you use to cook with...oil or butter or crisco. works just the same...saves time and it keeps your pan hot and seasoned for the nect batch. Good Luck

How much does it cost to fix oil pan and drain plug?

I got a 1996 Toyota camry. I went to another place for an oil change and they found oil pan threads is pulled and drain plug threads is stripped. They suggested me to bring my car to a repair shop as soon as possible and also they said whoever did the oil change last time is the one responible for those damaged. However, I already moved to another town and it seems little impossible to ask for warranty because I can't bring it to the last shop to fix it. So I decide to bring my car to another repair shop to fix the problem.

How much does it usually cost to re-thread/replace the oil pan and how much to replace a new drain plug? How much does it cost to fix oil pan and drain plug?
    ~$20

    1.) Go to junk yard

2.) get non-screwed up oil pan

2.) take off old oil pan

3.) put on new oil pan

    4.) Oil pan fixed

How much does it cost to fix oil pan and drain plug?
Find out size of drain hole and buy a retreading kit. I also would buy a plug that has a lever on the end so when u screw it in there u push lever down it has a rubber seal in it. When u push the lever it spreads the rubber out to fit more snugly. I can remember what those plugs are called though. I used that kit and it worked. How much does it cost to fix oil pan and drain plug?
If the pan and plug threads were stripped already, was the car leaking oil there? It seems more likely they were fine and the place you took your car to this time, not last time, is to blame for the stripped threads.

Well the oil pan is on the bottom of the engine, and the bolt is on the very bottom of the pan.

Here's a picture, and you can somewhat make out the bolt.

    http://image.fourwheeler.com/f/9084556+w

You can use either type of wrench, though using a socket will reduce the chance of rounding the bolt head.Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler?
Go to the passenger side of the jeep, from behind the front tire if you look directly under the engine you will see a black pan with a bolt plug on the side of the pan toward the bottom of the side. If you find it and you aren't sure if you really have it, the muffler pipe and then the oil filter are pretty much on top of it. When you change your filter excess oil usually spills from it and you don't even have to move you're oil bucket cause it's right over where the plug is anyway, just wipe the oil of the muffler or it'll burn and smell.Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler?
The oil drain plug is shown in the write up here. The write up is for a newer model 4.0L that doesn't have a distributor cap like the older 4.0L.

    http://www.jeepz.com/forum/engine/21699-

You can use an adjustable as the drain shouldn't be fitted too tightly. I normally use a ring spanner, 5/8 inch I think it is.

One thing I must comment on is step 5 where it says about removing the oil filler cap. The oil filler cap on TJs can be stubborn to remove when the engine is hot and can break in two leaving the threaded part in the rocker cover. You then need to use grips to hold and turn the threaded section of cap out.

What I'd do is loosen the filler cap when the engine is cold and turn it back on so it just stops before warming the engine. It will come off easily then after the engine is warmed up.

I learnt this AFTER breaking the cap on my 97 TJ.

When fitting a new oil filter instead of using a little oil to wet the seal I use a little grease smeared over the seal. I find it makes the filters easier to remove at oil changes.Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler?
most every oil pan plug will be on the bottom of all oil pans, and there won't be any other bolts there.

think about it . when changing the oil, all the oil has to come (drain) to the bottom of the pan. if it didn't you would always be letting some dirty oil remain in the engine. always make sure the oil is hot before you drain it. more will come out when it's hot. don't forget to replace the oil filter every time you change your oil. usually 3,000 to 4,000 miles.you'll want to get what they call an oil filter wrench for that. when you buy the oil and filter ask about the wrench. shouldn't be over $5.00 i believe for the wrench.Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler?
There is only 1 bolt in the general area on a TJ but on my CJ the transmission drain plug is about 4 inches away.

Sounds like someone stripped the threads and used a heli-coil to fix it. You are going to have to get the heli-coil off the old plug and get a new heli-coil to carefully repair it.

It that doesn't work, you need a new oil pan and if you do that change the screen on the oil pump.

How can i stop the leak in my oil pan in my civic 93?

there's a leak in the oil pan of my 93 civic ex, and its not the oil pan gasket, i think the pan strip because i put in a size bigger nut to stop it and it only did for that one time and now that i changed the oil again it started to leak once again, and so is there like a seal that i can put on the nut thing, like would a threadlocker jell work?? without replacing the pan?How can i stop the leak in my oil pan in my civic 93?
have you replaced the drain bolt washer on the plug that you put into the oil pan before you refilled the engine with oil? If you don't replace the drain bolt washer when you change the oil you will get a leak from the drain bolt.

if you've already tried to jam a larger bolt into the drain bolt hole then you've probably damaged the threads and have oil leaking through the thread. Other than replacing the oil pan, which you'll probably have to do if that is the case, the only other thing to try is a product like %26quot;lock-tite%26quot; to seal the threads.

it might work but I wouldn't be too optimistic. You could try an epoxy but you'd probably never get the bolt out again.

again, start with the obvious and replace the drain plug washer if you've not changed it. You may find that is the cause of your leak.

How to change engine oil on a 2002 BMW 325i ?Where is the engine oil pan and screw?
On a BMW, it is best to have someone change it that is certified, ask them to let you watch so you will know how to do it and do it correctly, if you mess it up it can cost you at least $4000, to $7000 to fix a blown motorWhere is the engine oil pan and screw?
The oil pan holds the engine oil used for cooling moving parts. When the engine is shut off the oil drains back into the pan, there fore the pan must be a low point, there fore look bolted to the bottom of the engine. Can you tell me in detail how and where engine oil of a toyota corolla flows?

My car suddenly stops pumping oil. I cheked everything but all seems o.k. There is enought oil. screen on the oil pan is clean, change new oil pump, cleaned one mechanical device fould stocked, is has a pistonlike device with a spring and oil seems to run through it. I do not know what it is called. Oil do not even reach oil filter. Help Help. Now I am trying to figure out what should I do next. I am trying see other repair man but I have to have understanding of how this things work. Help HelpCan you tell me in detail how and where engine oil of a toyota corolla flows?
Oil is picked up by the pump through a sump filter and through the oil filter. From there, through oil galleries in the block and head to the crankshaft and camshaft. Oil is flung in a fog state to the underside of the pistons and through the connecting rod to the piston pin. Oil is also dripped onto the valves. Your oil pump, seals and pressure regulator (the spring thing) would be the first place to check. Can you tell me in detail how and where engine oil of a toyota corolla flows?

Need to change timing belt, serpentine belt & oil pan on Acura TL. What other things to get done?

Please recommend other repair items that should get done when I am spending on the labor cost to get these done. How much should I expect to spend on these repairs in Portland, OR?Need to change timing belt, serpentine belt %26amp; oil pan on Acura TL. What other things to get done?
Definitely change the water pump along with the timing belt. There is very little extra labor, and you don't want it to start leaking (requiring having to do the whole job again) before the next timing belt change, or, even worse, to seize and ruin the belt and your engine. Looks like $600-$900 will cover it all - see the first source.

  • If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?

This happen on my car when i was changing the oil the screw just broke off and fell in the pan... its a 1990 Olds Cutlass Supreme. any tips on how to pull it out other than pulling the whole engine out.... thanks. If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?
Where did you break a screw from that it would fall into the oil pan? I can't see that happening unless you dropped it in the oil filler,

Some vehicles have a magnet on the drain plug, but most don't. If it is in the bottom of the oil pan, it probably won't hurt anything, but if you are not sure you can always pull the pan off and remove it. You can do that without pulling the motor in most cars.If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?
What screw can break with an oil change? Do you mean the drain plug bolt? This is a pretty heavy bolt to just break off. This question makes no sense to me, please give further details about what has happened, until then i would not attempt to start the engine, if the screw is lodge elsewhere other than in the pan, you could destroy the pistons or valves. Are you sure it is in the pan? If so, then you should be OK, and maybe if you install a magnetic drain plug, you may get lucky and catch it with the magnet.

good luck......If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?
not sure how you broke a screw on an oil change, but i imagine it's actually in the cylinder head.try to dislodge it by pouring the drain oil back into the filler hole as fast as you can(dont use a funnel, it wont flow enough}.you need a screen of some sort over your catch pan to see if you got it. better yet,get a flexible magnetic probe and search the head that way before using the high volume oil techniqueIf the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?
nothing bad should happen. The oil pickup tube that is connected to the oil pump has a screen and that won't let it get sucked up. Try a strong magnet and draw it toward the hole of the drain plug to remove the broken piece. Also, you can purchase a drain plug with a built in magnet for extra protection. If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?
the oil pump pickup on the engine has a strainer, its not meant to clean the oil, but the holes in it are small enough that nothing can usually get through unless its the size of a grain of sand.If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?
it would be very difficult for a screw to fall into the oil pan from the top of the motor pull the valve cover, use a magnetic pick up tool, but find that screw before you do anything else

Self tapping oil drain plug: How tight can I make it? Will they always leak?

I had one put in by Jiffy Lube two oil changes ago. It was fine for months (5000 miles). Then I had someone else change the oil. He said that these plugs are only good for about 5 changes, then I need a new oil pan. But since he changed it, I have spots on my driveway. Could it be he didn't tighten it enough, for fear of breaking something?

Also, I haven't actually seen this plug. Is it a thread inside a thread or is it just one self tapping thread that gets reseated each time? I dont have ramps to drive up on . Honda Accord 2001.Self tapping oil drain plug: How tight can I make it? Will they always leak?
No idea, but it sounds like whoever did it the last time is trying to get you to spend money on a new oil pan. Go back to Jiffy Lube and tell them to check it for you. I'm sure they will.Self tapping oil drain plug: How tight can I make it? Will they always leak?
He/they may have lost the neoprene or brass sealing washer.Self tapping oil drain plug: How tight can I make it? Will they always leak?
it's just a tapered rethredding plug that when tight and the neopreme washer on it will be as good as the factory plug and shouldn't wear out or leak as long as the gasket is on there.

What kind of oil filter should I use for a 1996 Hyundai Elantra? And how many quarts does it take?

I'm having my oil pan changed and I need to know what kind of filter to buy and how many quarts... I know it takes 10w-30 oil... It's a little four cylindar too... Fram is good 4 quarts is enough but why oil pan change?ANY high mileage oil 10w-30What kind of oil filter should I use for a 1996 Hyundai Elantra? And how many quarts does it take?
DO NOT BUY FRAM. THEY ARE WEAK AND CHEAPLY MADE.

I recommend the Hyundai Brand Oil filter. They're like $6.00, but they're very high quality. The quality is better than the $10.00 Mobil 1 oil filter. On a website, someone cut a Hyundai Oil filter open and found that the materials inside are high quality.

I highly recommend the Hyundai Brand oil filter. I also recommend Castrol brand of oils if you use conventional type. Since your car is leaking, i recommend conventional oil.

As for quarts, sorry I can't help you.

How hard to change oil pump?

I have a 93 Suburban K1500 with 110,000 miles on a 350. Has low oil pressure and will knock when cold or at idle. Just started doing it, so I think I might be able to save it since the knock is not bad yet and goes away when oil pressure comes up a little. Is it simply a matter of draining the oil, dropping the pan and swapping out the pump? Will the 4wd be in the way?How hard to change oil pump?
it sounds like your pickup screen on the oil pump is clogged up. you could have a flush done on the enging and see if that helps, but if you have to drop the oil pan to clean the pickup you might as well change the pump as well. all in all about 3 hours to change the pump. the 4 wheel drive does not add much more difficulty to the job.How hard to change oil pump?

How easy is it to Change an Oil Pump in a 80's 300zx turbo (z31)?

Ya, I figure my oil pump died... I have no lift or anything all I have is jacks, and what I was wondering is how hard is it to change the oil pump (ie take the oil pan and all the rigging underneath the car that is in the way) while only having the car up on jack stands (in the winter :( Or is it one of those jobs where taking the engine out is a more viable option? How easy is it to Change an Oil Pump in a 80%26039;s 300zx turbo (z31)?
Depends on your mechanical ability, how much engine work have you done? If you can clearly remove the oil pan it shouldn't be to difficult. I would not pull the engine if you can avoid it. If you want to tackle it and your engine mileage is fairly low; by Nissan Standards less than 200K. I would get a Haynes or Chilton Manuel at the library if possible and check the procedures. You might be able to remove the lower cross-member and use a transmission jack to keep the engine in place while you drop the pan and remove the oil pump.

If you have a high mileage engine, you might be better off buying a crate motor. Japanese low-mileage crate motors are fairly cheap if you pay the freight from Japan. Try an internet to see what I mean.

  • How long would it take to get the oil pan gasket changed in my car?

It's a 2008 Mazda6. Is this something I'll be able to wait for at the dealer? Or should I drop it off for the day? Or is it a really big job that will require me to leave it overnight? It seems like it should be a small job, but someone told me they may have to pull the engine out to do it. Not sure if that's true or not. Any thoughts? How long would it take to get the oil pan gasket changed in my car?
I doubt they will have to pull the engine completely out of the car, but it is possible that it will have to be lifted up off the motor mounts to get working clearance between the oil pan and the frame.

If the mechanic doesn't run into other problems, the job should only take a couple of hours, but it's probably better to give them a full day so the shop can properly schedule and coordinate the mechanic's time. How long would it take to get the oil pan gasket changed in my car?

Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?

1998 Toyota V6 with 150,000 miles had the oil light come on. No abnormal engine noises were heard while driving to repair facility. (or ever for that matter) Tests by mechanic concluded that the pump is failing at high temperatures. In the process of taking things apart, the mechanic found %26quot;aluminum and brass particles in the oil pan%26quot;.

Since the pan has never been removed before, is there a quantity of particles that would be expected?

Where would the brass particles come from?

    Recommendations?

Background: Car has been reasonably well maintained with routine oil changes at a Toytoa dealership.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
brass is bad can only come from bearings youre time with this engine is limited best bet is to have new bearings rolled in they can do this with oil pan off it mite give you a few more years good luckMetal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
metal particles in the oil pan are a big problem.if they move around your bottom end they will chew on everything. the right amount is nearly zero. now if its not too late you can try a magnetic oil drain plug to keep the stuff from circulating, and obviously make sure the oil pump is working.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
Send in an oil sample from your engine and the oil analysis results will tell you what's been wearing abnormally, if anything, in your engine. Switching to a full synthetic oil like Mobil One will reduce the engine wear and extend the life of the engine:

    http://www.testoil.com/?referrer=google%26amp;

http://www.mobiloil.comMetal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
A handfull of small flakes are usually on my magnetic drain plug when I change the oil. The brass is from bearings, which is a bad sign. You have done major damage to your engine. If it still runs then drive keep driving it, but don't ever drive with the oil light on, EVER.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
oil pump is a positive displacement gear pump each gear spins on an axis the brass is from the bushings ...metal particles are not normal ...indication of metal to metal wear

my recommendation would be to flush the oil system..use cheap oil run it about a half hour and drain....refill with oil of choice I am assuming that they changed the pump and reinstalled the pan...right?...ask the shop if they use a lab for oil analysis if so ..your next 3 or 4 oil changes a sample should be sent to the lab results will tell you if you have anything else going on in there

How long does it take to replace an oil pan on a VW Jetta?

I have to have my oil pan replaced b/c the last Valvoline that changed my oil put the wrong size drain plug in and stripped the pan's threads. should nt that long maybe a day or two and why not try a self threading plugHow long does it take to replace an oil pan on a VW Jetta?
    Cost depends on the garage.

I would make the same garage pay for the stripped threads.

They have to drain the oil of course and then put on the pan and put the oil back in. It is not supposed to take that long.

  • How do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?

Ok my daily driver is a 1993 Suburban 3/4 ton 4x4. It has 293,000 miles. My oil pressure is fine when I start it but after about 10 minutes it runs very low. I am going to replace the pump simply because, even though it might not be the main problem, I know it probably needs it anyway. Any suggestions would be great. Do I just need to remove the oil pan, or is there more to it? ThanksHow do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?
    I agree. 20-W50.

The oil pan needs a significant amount of clearance to be removed.

If yours is four wheel drive, it's going to be a real challenge. How do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?
Yes, you do have to remove the oil pan...if there isn't enough clearance between the pan and crossmember (at least 4 inches) the engine has to be lifted to give the necessary clearance. It's better to let a shop do it, they have the equipment to get it done right...How do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?
yea,you need to drop the oil pan and i think theres 2 or 4 bolts has to come out and the pump comes out, along with the pick-up screen.the pick-up tube pulls right out of the pump, but make sure the screen is straight down to the oil, when you install it in the other pump.make sure you fill the new pump with petroleum jelly, before you install it,so it wont be sucking air, then clean out the pan and use a new gasket and install the pan,and put new oil and filter in it,and your good to go.its not hard, just time consuming. How do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?
You can put all the pumps you want but it won't stop the thermal expansion on the main and rod bearings that get oiled from the pump first. your oil pressure switch is in the block at the top of the motor that gets oil pressure last, when the mains get hot all the oil pours out between the bearings and crankshaft causing a loss of pressure at the end of the oiling system. short of a rebuild, I would try a straight weight

oil like straight 40w or 50w depending on where you live and

what season of the year it is. straight weight oil stays thicker than milti viscosity oil and might help, and an oil change to try first is a lot easer than an oil pump changeHow do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?
remove the oil pan and you should see it hanging there, unbolt it and install the new one, also it helps if you take the cover off the new pump so you can see the pump gears and put some grease in the gears and button it back up as this helps the pump pick up oil quicker on the first start-up.

How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?

I have a 1985 Trans am. Rebuilding the car, and tuning it up. I went to change the oil in the enigine, and someone had stipped the head of the drain plug? Vise Grips should work nicely. Once you do get it out by a new plug and gasket. It should only cost about $5.00.How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?

you can spot weld a nut on it that will bring it out,i have done that a few times, they will come out like that ,i run across that a lot ,good luck,How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?
Tap a hole(drill slight depth) in the center of the head of the bolt. Get a tool called and %26quot;easy out%26quot; Looks like a drill bit but the spiral is reverse so when you turn the bolt to go out the bit wants to dig deeper in the pilot hole you tapped. When you are ready to use the easy out bit use a hammer to seat it than go from there. Good luckHow do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?
Get a small to medium chisel and hammer a notch in the edge of the stripped bolt. . Once you have the notch formed, stop and dull the point on the chisel so it won't cut a piece off, but the force will transmit into the bolt and loosen it. Hammer it counter clockwise and replace. How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?
try using a pipe wrench on it. that should bring it, unless the threads are stripped. after you get it out, put a self tapping plug in it.How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?
suggest that there is an adjustable socket on the market now that tightens around the head of the bolt as you unscrew the bolt. The harder you pull to loosen the plug, the more the socket grabs the head of the bolt. How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?
you can also TAP a 12 point socket over the damaged head and try using a ratchet to remove it. just dont get carried away with the hammer. How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?
Not that it applies to you, but it is wonderful how many times I have had to think carefully about which way to turn a nut or bolt when I am upside down under the car or under the hood. Vise grips of the right sort should do the job without any problem whatsoever. wondering if you are trying the right plug?

push comes to shove, get one of those gizmos that let you pump the old oil out via the dipstick tube.

http://www.chiltondiy.com/1997 ford ranger v6 2wd OIL PAN GASKET change? how hard is it? does the engine have to be lifted up it off?
This baby is lots of fun. you need to lift the motor allmost completely out. Lifting it slightly without removing the trans will not work. It does not clear the oil pump pickup tube. Sorry, but it is better to pull the motor. I`ve done to many of these being towed in from diy`s who tried to cut corners. One guy even cut the pan in half and still couldn`t get it off. He was going to cut the new one and weld it back together.1997 ford ranger v6 2wd OIL PAN GASKET change? how hard is it? does the engine have to be lifted up it off?
It's a pain in the butt. You might have enough room to drop the pan far enough and replace, if not you'll have to jack up the motor for xtra clearance(if you do, watch what is getting close to hitting or pulling under the hood) Definitely use a one piece gasket.1997 ford ranger v6 2wd OIL PAN GASKET change? how hard is it? does the engine have to be lifted up it off?
its a one piece oil pan gasket, jack the motor up a little unbolt the pan and let it fall, remove the old gasket and work the new gasket around the pick up tube and put it back together, dont need to remove the pan ,dont make the job any harder than it needs to be, dont remove the engine this about a 3 hour job in your driveway1997 ford ranger v6 2wd OIL PAN GASKET change? how hard is it? does the engine have to be lifted up it off?
I dont know how the ranger is but I know in a 91 aerostar they left the engine in the van and they had to take the muffler, starter, and a whole bunch of other stuff off to replace it and the total for labor alone was $250.00 but you will not find anyone cheap to do it. It would not be hard but it would be very very very time consuming and you better know what your doing before you even start messing with the oil pan gasket.

How do I change the oil in a 1997 Geo Tracker 4 door?

I see s screw for what I believe is the oil pan about three-quarters of the way forward on the passenger side. I need to know if this is actually the oil pan. It is a short bolt that is opened with a square socket. The housing for the bolt is somewhat dome-shaped. I looked throughly for another bolt that may have been the oil pan, but could not find one. • 1994 Pontiac Firebird, How can I change the oil pump.?

How can I change the oil pump? I know how to get the oil pan off but the book states that you have to take off the flywheel too? Per the car manual it also states that you have to lift the engine out to change it. Is this so? Can't I change it with out doing all of that? I Would like to do the job my self. But I never have changed a oil pump before.1994 Pontiac Firebird, How can I change the oil pump.?
The reason the book says to remove the flywheel is because you will not be able to raise the engine high enough to remove the oil pan.If the transmission and flywheel are out of the way the pan will be able to be removed. This is not a do it yourself job. You will either have to remove trans. and flywheel or remove engine1994 Pontiac Firebird, How can I change the oil pump.?
If the book says you have to remove the flywheel, then either the transmission has to come out or the engine. I'd take it to a shop, this is not really a do it yourself first timer doing an oil pump kind of job, it's a little more involved and special knowledge is needed.1994 Pontiac Firebird, How can I change the oil pump.?
You will have to remove the engine to get the oil pan off to get to the oil pump. You didn't state what size engine so I can't get too specific.

How much should it cost to get a oil pan gasket replaced on my Sebring?

I have a 2001 Chrysler Sebring. 2.7 V6 engine. Just had a guy find that my oil filter was not tight when I got the oil changed at a %26quot;quick lube%26quot; place. He also found that my oil pan is leaking too. About how much should it cost to get this fixed? How much should it cost to get a oil pan gasket replaced on my Sebring?
keep this in mind you're oil pan gasket almost never leaks because the oil level should be just enough below the edge of the pan and its never really full to the top so get a second opinionHow much should it cost to get a oil pan gasket replaced on my Sebring?

I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?

im trying to do an oil change on my old school benz and, i stripped the nut that drains the oil. i tried those wrenches that they have at sears to remove stripped nuts, but they only stripped it more. any suggestions? please help, time is of the essence!I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?
If there's anything left to grip get your hands on a small 8%26quot; Ridgid Brand pipe wrench or large Vice Grip pliers. If your lucky any auto parts store will have a replacement oil pan drain plug. A plug from your Benz dealer would be better. When you install the new plug bare in mind that the hex nowadays is always a metric size.

If all else fails center punch the pan bolt and drill a large hole in it and get your hands on the largest screw extractor you can and reverse it out. Thank the last SOB that over tightened your oil pan drain bolt.I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?
Vicegrips. But if the bolt is stripped so badly that those damaged-bolt-removers can't get it off, I wouldn't put a lot of faith in vicegrips either. I think you're going to be looking at replacing the entire oil pan. You'll need to undo all the bolts that hold it to the engine and pull it off. With it being full of oil still, the job will be messy as hell. You'll need a new oil pan gasket as well when you put the new pan on.I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?
you can get a kit called a bolt extracter kit ive got a set never had any probsI stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?
Vise grips are a life saver. Just be sure to lock them down as tight as you can possibly get them. Then I try to pull down on them as I twist the bolt. Hopefully it will catch and you can get it out. Now the problem will be getting it back in. With the threads stripped, you will have damage on the oil pan too.

Do you get another oil pan, or try drilling it out and using a tap and increasing the bolt to a larger size? I don't think that a heli-coil will work in this case. good luck.I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?
get a pair of vise grip locking pliers and lock them on the bolt as tight as you can and then smack the bottom of them with a hammer just make sure you are loosing and not tighteningI stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?

slap a set of vice grips on it dude. that should workI stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?
Best solution, buy new oil pan and oil pan gasket or try this:

get a dremmel or such and use the metel cutting wheel.

Carefully cut a slot across the nut, then use a flat head screw driver to take out he nut.I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?
try vice grips like everyone else has said.If that doesn't work try using drilling a little hole in it a ways and then use an easy out. And of course then you will have to get a new drain plug, but you will get it out.

89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one?

Went to get an oil change, they told me the pan is in bad shape, didn't change the oil said that might make the situation worse. They told me the same thing a year ago, changed oil once since then. It loses a quart about every 3 months. It has 175k on it and runs great and is in good shape overall.does anyone have an idea of how much it would cost to replace the pan,and does anyone in northeast mass.(lowell,ma.)who does this type of work and wouldn't rip me off.any answers would be appreciated.i love this car. ford girl you there?89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one?
    OPTION 1: Repair the leak.

You seem to be looking for an inexpensive way out or quick fix and if that is the case ...

If you can locate the leak and it is not huge, drain the oil, grab a tube of JB Weld, wire brush the area and apply the JB Weld to the area, allow it to dry, give it a quick spray with tremclad or any rust paint, replace your oil and you are laughing :)

This is a quick fix, and will not stop the corrosion from continuing but the JB Weld will outlast the rest of the pan :)

    OPTION 2: Replace the Pan

The most expensive oil pan for a 89 town car that I can find locally has a retail price of $90 complete with pan gasket and oil plug gasket.

If the repair shop needs more than 2 hours to install it, they need to buy themselves some proper equipment.

This talk of three and four hours is insane ... you only have to let the motor mounts go and raise the engine a few inches to give you the needed clearance to remove the pan.

On a normal car without obstructions, and in a shop environment with the proper tools and equipment, this is a 45-60 minute job at worst.

Releasing the motor mounts and raising the engine a few inches might take 30-40 minutes at worst and about 10 minutes to put them back in if you have a engine comparment lift.

That simply does not take 2 - 3 hours of additional time.

You should be able to have a new oil pan installed for $180 Best Case - $250 Worst Case89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one?
unfortunately, you might have to pull the motor out/drop the front crossbar to change it, depending on which end has the oil sump. You'd better check what goes with the job, but STOP putting oil on the road, you'll kill someone!!!!!!!89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one?
You can get a replacment pan from any wrecking yard for about 15 bucks. you can also get a new after market one from any autoparts store. As long as it's not a double sump pan it's pretty easy to change out. most shops should only charge around an hour of labor to do the job plus the cost of an oil change. if you picked up the pan your self, then paid someone to do it, you would be looking about 130 to 160 for the whole job. this should also include the price of the gasket for the oil pan. check out cartalk.com for reomened shops in your area. Maybe you could even take it to tom and ray there is Mass.. not sure how far you are from Cambridge.89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one?
That car does have a double sump oil pan. The crossmember is not removable.

It is possible to replace the pan without completely removing the engine. The motor mounts are disconnected, the engine raised as far as possible. Then, a good mechanic can unbolt the oil pump and drop it into the pan. Then, the pan can be removed from the car.

Most shops will charge a lot more than 1 hour.

3 to 4 hours would be more like it.89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one?
double sump triple sump cant unbolt the cross member? who cares?.......changing your oil will not effect the oil loss from your pan...ford oil pans constantly rust in the late 80s and early 90s because of low quality metal...we understand u love your car but its time to let go....175,000 miles?..sell it and buy a new one...the price of this repair is to great...drive it or sell it but don't waste your hard earned money replacing that pan......we did one last month total bill for new pan $675.43 i tried to talk this guy out of this repair, but he wanted it done .....6 weeks later.....car had other unrelated issues and he decided to sell it......he could have saved 700.00 ...so think about it first

depending on how bad its leaking you may have to try and use another gasket on the plug and if that doesn't work rtv sealant may work on it for a while, but i think you,ll wind up changing it,they do make a larger plug that will thread its self and stop them from leaking, but you have to be careful when using those ,you get one shot at it when your doing it and if it doesn't work you usually have to get another oil pan, good luck with it.How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?

A liquid gasket, or a new drain plug. How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?
Back to your original issue. Who ever changed the oil and stripped out the drain plug should have comprehensive insurance. I never in a thousand years would allow someone to install a heli-coil in the oil pan when it was still on the car. All it takes is one chip of steel to ruin an oil pump or get pumped through the oil system.

All you can do now is purchase a new factory drain plug. The threads do not seal the oil, its the tapered gasket under the hex flange. Some oil pan drain plugs have sealed O rings. Go to some local auto parts store or the dealer of your car and find the best drain plug with a gasket sealer at the top.

How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqu

How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a technique issue? I have

been taking my 2002 Hyundai (115,000 miles) to a dealership for oil changes over the past 6 years and am told stripping is a

normal occurrence with multiple oil changes. I now need a very expensive new oil pan. Help me understand what has happened. How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqu
No this is not a normal occurrence. The dealership tightened the plug too tight and stripped it. You could retap the hole and use a bigger drain plug. Or retap the hole and try the same plug. Either way is cheaper than paying the same morons that stripped it to put in a new oil pan, which you dont need. How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqu
One time I was told by an instant oil change place that the hole was stripped and they had gotten the bolt back in, but it would not be able to be taken out again, or if it could be taken out again it would be impossible to get it back in, and tried to get me to buy something expensive (I don't even remember if it was a bolt or what, but it was a lot). I took it somewhere else for the next oil change and they said nothing about it and I never again had a problem. At the time the car was about 20 years old and had endured regular oil changes. My next car lived to be 15, and my current car is 13, with regular oil changes and never a bolt stripping problem. One would hope a dealership would be a little less shady than an instant place but maybe they are making it up to to try and get your money, can you get a second opinion? How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqu
i would not concider it normal.

if it's stripped it's because it was either put in on an angle or tightened to much and stripped that way.

while it's never happened to me (because i have never taken it anywhere but home to be changed) i would think that the hole that's stripped could be enlarged and an enlarged bolt put into the new threads. ask around i do know that oil pans (for what ever reason i don't know) are excessively expensive. so expensive that I've seen repair shops ask if you want a used one instead. (not for me)

my car is now 15 years old and the oil is changed about every 3,000 miles has 140,000 miles and never once had a stripped bolt.

the places that have done that just don't want to take the blame for what's happened to yours.

I'd start taking it else where.

Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqu
It's very common. It's just like stripping the screw of any piece of furniture or item in your house. Mine's been stripped for at least a decade. Never bothered to change it. It leaks enough to leave ugly stains so I lay down cardboard in my garage, but it doesn't leak enough to cause much more concern than that. How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqu
No, this is not normal wear. We have a thousand car fleet with many cars serviced every month and half on mileage and never had this problem unless our techs overtightened. How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqu
not normal, there is a torque for the drain plug. try usu a 6 point socket or wrench to break it loose.

No offense but if you can't figure out what plug to remove for an oil change, you have no business doing it. Take it to a shop and have it done correctly. It isn't that expensive. I wanted to change the oil on my 2005 ford focus zx4 but i cant find the oil drip pan can anyone tell me where?
It would be called a drain plug. It is a large bolt on the back or bottom of the oil pan. If you do not know what the oil pan is PLEASE go to a mechanic.I wanted to change the oil on my 2005 ford focus zx4 but i cant find the oil drip pan can anyone tell me where?
On the bottom of the engine...its just a bolt and isn't exactly rocket science. Get under the car and you should see it pretty easily. Warm the engine first then loosen it with a spanner then your fingers but push in as you loosen it. Then when it's undone pull it away quickly or you'll get a sleeve full of oil. Change the oil filter at the same time....if you can find it

Anybody with half a brain and maybe one hand can do this job.

First you have to drain the oil through the oil drain plug. The oil pan does not have to be removed.

Then remove the plastic lower engine cover to expose the oil level sensor.

Unplug the connector and remove the 3 small nuts, then pull down and out the sensor.

Replace all items in reverse order and refill with oil (old or new w/filter).How hard is it to change an oil level sensor in a BMW 325i?

my best advice is to make damn sure it's the oil pan gasket and not the intake manifold gasket or something else up top leaking and running down the ends of the block. I just read the service manual procedures and it looks like for both the 3.8L and the 5.7L you pretty much have to drop the engine cradle down to access the oil pan. Not to mention that they use RTV sealant on both sides of the new oil pan gasket so chances are you are going to get RTV all over everything. And if you have any oil anywhere the RTV goes, it won't seal and you'll be doing it all over again. So make sure it's the oil pan gasket leaking. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give this an 8.2000 camaro oil pan gasket leak?
Could be close to a 10. If you are lucky you can lift the engine maybe 12 inches or so. That would probably mean taking your exhaust loose and wires too in order not to break them. Centerpunch it and drill straight! You may need a right-angle drill motor if you are not up high enough on jack stands. Do not drill through plug completely if at all possible! You should know if you have a leak or not, if you car leaves oil spots all over the place, then it has a leak.

I would anticipate a 10 year old car to leak a little, if you only add one quart between oil changes, then it probably isn't enough to worry about unless you can't stand the mess on the driveway.

The important part is to check the oil regularly so you know how much it is using and leaking.

If you are really interested in how much the cost is to repair, you can look up online or phone local autopart stores for the cost of the gasket, then go down to the library and look up the labor time in a reference book for Mechanics. (Sorry I can't think of the name of that reference book right now but either a mechanic or a reference librarian will be able to tell you what it is). Anyway, if the labor book says 2.5 hours, then multiply by your favorite shops labor cost (probably about $60-$75 an hour) and you have done basically what a shop does to give you a quote. If that is too much work to look it up all yourself, call 2-3 shops in your local area and ask for a quote. How much will it cost me to get an oil pan leak fixed on a 97 geo prizm?

I have been reading of some plugs that strip instead of the oil pan... how do I tell if this is the case. I am worried that I will have to drop big buck on a new pan and hope this isn't the case. I know there are self-tapping plugs, too, but a lot of people claim they do not hold up well.2001 Camry -- How to tell if the oil pan threads or drain plug threads are stripped?
I believe you probably only stripped the plug not the pan, reason i think this is, on newer vehicles oil pans are made with a different material than the drain plugs. They are made with a stronger metal and the drain plug is typically an alluminum type alloy. This helps prevent you from having to replace a whole drain pan. You have a new enough model that Im 99% sure that you just need a new plug.2001 Camry -- How to tell if the oil pan threads or drain plug threads are stripped?

I agree with roy. take the motor mounts loose and raise the engine a few inches. the shape of the pan will help you get the clearance you need. usually 4-5 inches is enough and you should not have to take the tranny loose for this activity. remember SAFETY FIRST and make shure the engine is well supported before you put your hands or other body parts under it. Good luck

  • How can i locate the oil pan for my 99 Alero. I never changed oil before on my own?

i never attemped to change in my life. how do i know where the oil pan is locatedHow can i locate the oil pan for my 99 Alero. I never changed oil before on my own?
The oil pan is under the engine. Put the car up on jack stands and use wheel chocks. When you get under the car, you will see the pan plug. Remove it and the old oil will drain out. Catch it in a drain pan. Remove the oil filter and replace it with a new one. Replace the oil plug and put in four quarts of motor oil. Start the engine and wait for the oil light to go out or the pressure gage to rise. Look under the car for any leaks. Stop the engine and top off the oil to the full mark on the dip stick. Remove jack stands and wheel chocks. Dispose of used oil as a hazardous waste. Some auto parts stores will take the used oil for disposal or recycling. When you get good at it, the whole operation should take about 15-20 minutes. How can i locate the oil pan for my 99 Alero. I never changed oil before on my own?
No offense meant, but if you have to ask where the oil pan is, you had best leave your oil changes to Jiffy Lube. How can i locate the oil pan for my 99 Alero. I never changed oil before on my own?
get a wrench and look under the car for oil leaks, then loosen the drain plug that looks like a bolt in the midst of the biggest oil leak, this will either be your transmission or your oil, the transmission fluid is red the oil is black. ps, put pan under it to catch oil, put plug back in before adding oilHow can i locate the oil pan for my 99 Alero. How to change an oil pan gasket?

    Empty oil from drain plug

May as well change your oil filter since you will have to refill the oil

    Loosen bolts on oil pan

Take pan out, may need to pry a bit if it sticks.

Take a scraper and remove all of the old gasket and sealer from the pan and block

May as well clean out the oil pan if it is gunky, use gas to rinse, not water. Dry it out.

Put new sealer on pan careful to not plug up bolt holes

    Lay gasket over that

Bolt up to block, use torque specs. ask parts store for those. Tighten in a varrying pattern like lug nuts, not clockwise or you will tighten uneven and squeeze gasket wrong which can lead to a leak.

    Refill car with oil.

How much does it cost to change an oil pan on a 90 ford bronco full size.i heard the engine has to be lifted.?

It shouldn't be that much, I believe at max 2 hours labor.

The engine does need to be lifted, but can be done with a floor jack or with an engine hoist. The engine DOES NOT need to come out of the engine compartment though.

Instructions on how to do it can be found here if you want to do it yourself.

Is it an easy repair to change the lower oil pan on a 96 bmw 7 series? How long does it take to do?

From my experience working on German cars, this should be pretty easy to do. I put a pan on a VW Jetta and it took all of 10 minutes once the oil was drained out. German cars are very well thought out and the maintenance is normally very simple to complete. If you've ever done any work on cars before it shouldn't be hard.Is it an easy repair to change the lower oil pan on a 96 bmw 7 series? How long does it take to do?
It depends. If you have a fairly well equipped shop, and at least average knowledge about things automotive, it's easy enough. As to how long, how fast are you?

How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?

I just went to my friendly local quicky oil change shop for a oil change today. I was told I can't get a oil change because apparently the oil drain pan was rusted out and the sludge from old oil help keep it seal. I was also told that the replacement for the oil drain pan would cost about $1,000. I love my old crappy car but I don't love it enough to save it with $1,000.

So the only reasonable course to take was to drive it to the ground.

    I have few questions though.

    1. Is it safe to not change oil(will the car blow up?)

    2. How long would my car last without changing oil ( I last changed about 9 months/3,000 miles ago)?

    3. are there any alternates to not changing oil/repair?

    Thanks for any helps!

p.s. for those curious I drove 95 Ford Aerostar. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?
The most universal answer to your question about how long a car will last is %26quot;it depends%26quot;. Oil change intervals in the U.S. have been categorized by how the vehicle is used (e.g. all highway miles down to a service vehicle in stop-and-go traffic) Engines need oil with good lubricant characteristics to keep moving parts operating and to protect them from getting damaged. WIthout good oil film in all the right places, the result will be internal temperature buildup in the engine and metal-to-metal wear on items like crankshaft bearings, valve stems, etc. I've seen some new engines that look like the oil has never been changed seize after 8-12,000 miles. On an older engine, it's tough to say as it depends on the condition of the internal engine components, driving conditions, etc. Changing oil on a regular basis IS the answer on how to avoid engine seizure. Once the engine stops, you aren't talking engine repair - you're talking engine replacement. And I wouldn't expect an engine to seize at the most convenient location when you happen to be driving the vehicle.

You may wish to have someone else look at the condition of the oil pan. Quicky change oil places are good for routine stuff, but I wouldn't expect to get a highly qualified estimate from one of these places. If your pan is rusty, it's rusty - can avoid that. However, given that you successfully had the oil changed 9 months ago, my question is if the oil change shop you went to just didn't want to open up the job for liability reasons. Go get another few opinions on what you really have. Replacing an oil pan might not be cheap if something else is in the way under the vehicle and you can't easily get the pan off. Go get a few more opinions and ask lots of questions like specifically what would have to happen IF the oil pan were to be replaced. Ask to look under the vehicle with the mechanic so that you visually understand the problem and what options exist. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?
First of all is that new oil pan they quoted you made of gold? A new oil pan shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred dollars at the most.

Second not changing your oil is going to lead to engine failure. Most likely the engine will eventually either seize, or throw a rod.

Third there are alternatives to changing oil without removing the oil drain plug. Go to an autoparts store and purchase a vampire pump. Its a suction gun with a hose on it that will fit into the oil check hole where the dipstick is and stuck the oil out through the hole. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?
that is total BS. you can get the plug out...they are ramming you hard. Take it to another garage...they may need to change the oil drain plug...bout $5 for that...but it can be changed. my uncle and I own a garage and we'd never do that. might destroy the drain plug but it can be replaced. and to change the pan for $1000? that's absurd...maybe $200 if the pan is damaged but not anything like you are describing.

Get a second opinion man.How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?
Get a second opinion on that price (can they find you a used pan) from the junk yard. Or what about online. As long as you keep the oil level good it would do okay. Also, check on http://www.edmunds.com and post your question there for some expert mechanic input. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?
    1. no it is not safe for your car

    2. your car will last, but at reduced efficiency. oil keeps the engine lubricated and assists with cooling.

    3. there is no alternative to regular maintenance

And yes, replacing an oil pan will be pretty expensive (labor) as it's located under the crankshaft of the engine block on many cars. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?
